WordPress 101: Common Questions & Objections

WordPress 101: Should You Use .ORG or .COM?

We review recent conversations with our clients to help you understand the benefits of building a website with WordPress. Before we decided to use WordPress, these were typical conversations:

  • “My current website is hard to update. ”
  • “I need a new website.”
  • “I need a stand-alone blog that my current website will link to.”
  • “I need a hub to integrate in with my Social Media plan.”
  • “I’d like a fancy website, but my budget is tight right now.”

“I don’t need a blog, I need a website.”

WordPress 101: Common Questions & ObjectionsWell, we could make a strong case that every business needs a blog.  We don’t mean an “online journal of your inner most thoughts”. We mean your own mini-publishing machine to quickly and easily provide new, fresh information for your target audience.

Maybe you have an old website and needed to call the web developer every time you had small changes.  With a WordPress powered site, you can make these edits yourself!  And every time you have news or events, your website becomes the first place to notify the world of these updates.

Even better, your target audience now has a place to communicate back to you!

WordPress gives you this power and more!

A WordPress site can include your standard content, such as About or Benefits.  Plugins (add-ons) can add expanded functionality.

WordPress acts as a very powerful content management system (CMS), storing images, audio, video, pdfs and other documents for easy insertion into your pages. This scalable model can be used to build a simple brochure-style website, a business blog, an eCommerce site or a multi-level membership site. It also elegantly integrates with Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter!

Can your current website do that?!

Can your current website can do that?!

“But I don’t need those fancy options right now.”

Yes, but what if you do 6 months from now? Even if you ONLY need a few simple pages, WordPress is still the fastest and cheapest way to develop a site. AND… when you are ready to upgrade, it will be simple.

We feel so strongly about this that we have a hard time recommending any other solution for our clients!

“I just want a plain brochure-style website.”

Remember when you first realized how important it was to have a website?  Well, these days you need to have an interactive, frequently updated website and Social Media presence.

We feel so strongly about this that we have a hard time in good conscious advising a client to throw away their money on such a foolish investment.

We also understand that you are a busy professional and don’t have time to make these updates yourself.  Invest 10 minutes and hire us to be your virtual sales assistant.

“Can you ‘convert’ my old website?”

No. It will need to be a “fresh installation.” Think of trying to rebuild an old house that is falling down.  The fastest and cheapest method is to demolish it and start from scratch.

“What will it look like?”

“I have an exact idea in mind for the look of the site.”

Our background is graphic design, but we’ll let you in on a little secret… We advise our clients to look at the big picture and not get so hung up on looks. It’s like just wanting a red car and not thinking about safety, mpg or price.

In order to bring you a low cost solution, we ask that you not be locked into a firm idea of design and layout.  Our standard packages rely on one of many beautiful pre-designed “themes.” Some of these themes can include minor customization (color change, adding a logo) to match your branding.

At the project start, we will provide you with a list of preferred providers of themes, and you can browse online to make your selection.

That extra money you normally would spend on custom look & feel… well, we are suggesting you invest it in building your Social Media presence instead.  Later when you have grown your business and network, you can thank us for putting aside our design hat and putting on our business strategy hat.

However, we would be happy to provide a custom quote for special development needs.

“I just want a website but no social media.”

A few years ago I would have said this is a really bad idea and are going to strongly advise against it.  Social media was such a huge change in how businesses communicate with their customers that it’s like saying you don’t want a telephone or computer. HOWEVER, things have changed and if you get clients after they get to know, like and trust you from in-person contact… this may be OK. You can do a simplified social media strategy (Facebook personal profile, LinkedIn profile) to boost those connections. Your site can link to this.

“My marketing plan is cold calling and brochures.”

That might have worked for you about 10 years ago.  If that is your marketing plan now, well… plan on your competition taking advantage of this while they grab hold of your audience online.  The time you spend calling one person could be spent engaging multiple people online. And the money you spend on a brochure that is outdated as soon as it is printed could be your budget to hire our professional writer to write new & engaging content for your website on a weekly basis.

WordPress websites with blogs became popular to allow for “content marketing”. The downside is this takes a LOT of work to build and maintain (someone needs to create content constantly!)

We can also talk about other options, such as how to create a repeatable referral system for your business. A great website is KEY to this process.

Here are examples of sites I have built:

WordPress gives you a foundation to upgrade at any time. I can work with you to determine your needs. The process goes like this:

  1. Start by scheduling a FREE Brand Breakthrough call to go over your needs.
  2. I may be able to give you a quick recommendation, or if you have a larger project, we may recommend a more in-depth (paid) consultation to review your needs.
  3. You may wish to review the features and benefits of WordPress with my blog posts or you can just rely on my expertise to make the best recommendation for you.
  4. If we decide to use WordPress, I have several options that to choose from, and I’ll pick the best one for your specific goals. Options include search engine optimized pages, newsletter signup, email forms and features to make creating new pages easier. We can also discuss special features and custom design.
