Here’s the unsexy truth — building your online brand before your strategy is putting the cart before the horse. And it might just kill your business.

Putting the cart before the horseRaise your hand if you’ve heard this: “if you build it they will come.” Get online, get a massive amount of social media followers, and you will be successful. Just use [info product or program] that teaches you the latest tips from [hottest social network] and you’ll have thousands of Likes, Followers, Raving Fans.

Hear me out, and save yourself countless hours and thousands of dollars of info products or programs you don’t need right now. I talk to a LOT of Entrepreneurs. I hear about how much time, money & energy they have put into info products & programs that mapped out the newest marketing tactics.

But they still are not moving forward.

They blame themselves. They are upset for being in debt. They are about to give up on their Entrepreneurial dreams. And it breaks my heart.

I know it seems like if you have a new idea for a product or service, nothing would make that idea seem tangible like a website or social media. So it might SEEM LIKE PROGRESS FORWARD to quickly get online.

However, many people in this situation are working with limited resources—time, money & energy—so this actually is a big waste and will put your idea even farther out of reach. Those resources could have been spent on a basic business strategy BEFORE marketing tactics.

Internet marketing simply doesn’t work if you don’t have a business plan. The all-too-common reality usually is someone WITH NO PROFITS & A LOT OF DEBT because they haven’t quite finished a product, service or program since they were using the [info product or program] that focused on marketing tactics with no way to make money.

Waste-of-MoneyThose internet gurus are EXCELLENT marketers… they are making money from telling you how much you need their [info product or program]. The gurus made millions. Yet I’ve  talked to people that have easily spent $250,000 combined on info products & programs that promised them wild success from internet marketing. Many of these people never made back their investment, because they focused on the marketing before the business plan.

The internet marketers rarely will turn you away from buying their [info product or program] because you aren’t ready to use it NOW. Sure, the info may be good (although changing quickly) and ONE DAY it might be useful. So they will still take your $27, $499, $999 or even $10,000 because ONE DAY you can use the info. Not being ready to use their info now isn’t part of their “money back guarantee”.

If you are OK with “investing” for what you ONE DAY may need, then stop reading. If you would rather focus on the fastest and easiest path to profits, keep reading for a simple way to create a strategic plan.

I know, I know… planning isn’t as much fun as marketing. But you must have a way to make money to make money with your online brand.

You will NEVER go wrong with having something for sale sooner than later. Think about it… I like you and follow you online. I recommend you to my friend. They like you and they want to buy from you. They are ready to spend $100 with you… and you have… NOTHING FOR SALE? But hey, they “like you”… so maybe in a few years they will be ready to buy from you? Not going to happen.

Every single minute that you put into building that online community could have been put into making a simple strategic plan. Here’s how.

Every marketing decision you make needs to consider key questions:

  • What are your business goals?
  • What product/service/program is ready to sell NOW?
  • REALLY — EXACTLY HOW ARE YOU GOING TO MAKE MONEY? 🙂
  • Who is your target audience? Why should they buy from you?
  • What are your calls to action?

If you had time to try to learn WordPress, be on a webinar, create a video, write a blog post or even go to a networking event, then you have time to answer these questions. No excuses or you’ll have no profits.
