Are You Distracted by Bright Shiny Objects?

Don’t let cool technologies or thinking that “everyone is doing it” distract you from the REAL REASON to use marketing… TO REACH YOUR BUSINESS GOALS.

“Social media” is a prime example of a distraction. First, it’s not one thing. It’s not a one-time thing either. It takes work and effort that most Entrepreneurs don’t want to put into it. And because of changes on sites like Facebook, that effort may not even be seen by your target audience.

There are many sites that you CAN use, but no one has the time to use them all. Each one requires setup and then on-going work. However, many Entrepreneurs have come to me asking about how to use “social media”, thinking it’s a magic solution. It’s not. 

If I think about the typical service-based businesses I work with, social media is not the first marketing suggestion that they usually need. Especially if they have a desk full of business cards of contacts they have not followed up with.

The marketing world is full of distractions. There’s always a new trend, “time-saving” software, or changes to the social media sites that require updates. Video! Everyone should be using it!! Search engine optimization! QR Codes!! YES! It’s the next big thing! Mobile marketing! Yes, text messages to your customers!

Plenty of marketers make money by trying to sell services or programs to teach Entrepreneurs the latest info. You’ll be pushed to sign up for webinars, listen to podcasts, read books and go to events that promise the latest and greatest marketing ideas.

The majority of this is wasted time, money and effort. Since you’re thinking about marketing, it may FEEL LIKE you’re working. However, if it’s not generating more revenue, it’s not working. If you only learn about new ideas, but never implement what you learn, it’s not working. 

Instead, let’s have the conversation about how you can avoid bright shiny objects and focus on what’s most important.

Let’s talk about what your business is trying to accomplish, including what your resources are (time, money & energy) to invest into marketing. Let’s identify your target audience and why they should buy from you. I’ll explain the importance of creating a solid foundation for your business. I’ll help you focus on the things that should be in your business plan but aren’t if you are trying to quickly act on your new idea as fast as you can.

But, that’s all PLANNING and it’s really boring and not exciting. “New” is always exciting. It seems like it’s a solution but if you don’t know what problem you are trying to solve it IS JUST A WASTE OF TIME.

So now, let’s get back to your business.
