Running a business can be exciting and fun, but it can also come with challenges and stress.

Keeping yourself in a good place and maintaining a healthy mental state brings lots of benefits, so whether you’re just starting up or you’re beginning to focus more on your small business, meditation is a useful way to enhance it.

Why Meditation Can Boost Your Business

Increased Focus & Concentration

Maintaining all the different aspects of a small business or website is difficult if you aren’t able to focus and concentrate. Meditation can increase your attention span, enabling you to work harder while getting less tired and exhausted, both physically and mentally. You’ll also feel less tired after long days, which will keep you feeling motivated and positive about your business.

Entrepreneurs start up a business with the most positive aspirations and dreams, but as time goes by and new challenges and difficulties arise, the business of your dreams might seem very far away. Meditating daily can help you to maintain a positive outlook on life, and it will help to erase any negativity which you might be feeling towards your business. While meditation can’t get rid of every negative emotion that you feel, it can certainly help to increase your overall positivity and health levels.

Tranquillity & Relaxation

Trying to successfully run a business can be one of the most stressful things you will ever do in your life, so keeping a cool head and maintaining a state of relaxation during rocky times is vital. Whether you’ve suffered a bad financial mishap or you feel like you’ve hit a plateau, stressing and worrying won’t help the situation at all. Meditation reduces stress hormones such as cortisol and enables you to relax easier. Regular and focused meditation can help you to keep your mind on track and boost your business in the best way possible.

At the start, you may find it easy to keep disciplined in terms of looking after your business. However, as time goes by, you may find it more and more difficult to stay on track. This is increasingly the case if you also have a day job and run a small business in your spare time. Whatever the circumstances, meditation can help you to stay disciplined and in control of your own life, which will help you to keep a good hold on your business.

Ways to Get Started

Explore various techniques and find out what works best for you. There is NO one-size-fits-all! So remember this if you don’t like the first thing you try. It’s a lot like marketing—you have to explore and find out what you like best.

One of my favorites and easiest is a technique called Yoga Nidra, or “Sleep Yoga”. I mean, we ALL know how to sleep! Yoga Nidra builds on how your body already knows how to relax, by taking you into a very deep state of relaxation.

All you need to do is to lay down in a comfortable position, and listen with headphones or to a teacher. You can do a short session (10-20 minutes) or longer. I have found that doing a meditation can help me feel as relaxed as many hours of sleep!! Relaxation is essential if you’re trying to work on a difficult project or work around a lot of stress in your personal life. Trust me, Yoga Nidra will help!! Get started by finding videos or apps on this, such as the one above.

I have a weighted eye pillow that I use for all my yoga (all moves on my back are extra relaxing) & meditation. This Lavender Eye Pillow is similar to the one I use. I also like the Bucky 40 Blicks Sleep Mask, as it does not touch your eyes. It helps me to quickly get into a deeper relaxed state by blocking out light. The weight reminds me to relax all of my face muscles.

If you’re in the Towson (Baltimore) area, check out my recommended Yoga teachers. At the end of each class, we end with at least 5 minutes of meditation, often in Corpse Pose (Savasana). Learn more about this pose in this video…

Some local studios run workshops on meditation. Check out Yoga on York, Baltimore Yoga VillageMovement Lab or do a search for your area.

Online classes & apps mean you have NO excuse for not fitting it into your schedule!
